Light Novel 'Ryuuou no Oshigoto!' Ends with 21st Volume
The GA Fes 2026: GA 20th Anniversary event announced on Sunday that Shirow Shiratori's Ryuuou no Oshigoto! (The Ryuo's Work is Never Done!) light novel will end its nearly 11-year-run with the 21st volume, subtitled Shirayukihime to Ryuuou no Kekkon (Snow White and the Dragon King's Marriage), set to be released on July 17.
Shiratori began penning the light novel under the GA Bunko label in September 2015, featuring illustrations by Shirabi (Musaigen no Phantom World, 86). The 20th volume went on sale on July 12 last year. The light novel has a cumulative 2.5 million copies of its volumes in print.
Young Gangan serialized a manga adaptation by Kogetaokoge from September 2015 to August 2019. Square Enix released the tenth and the final volume that same month.
Project No.9 produced a 12-episode television anime adaptation in Winter 2018. Crunchyroll simulcasted the anime with multiple subtitles, with Animax Asia broadcasting it in Southeast Asia.
BookWalker Global publishes the light novel digitally in English and released the 18th volume in November 2024.
Synopsis
Shogi, a Japanese game similar to chess, is one of the most popular board games in the country, played by everyone from children to the elderly. Some players are talented enough to take the game to a professional level. The title of Ryuuou, meaning "the dragon king," is only awarded to the person who reaches the pinnacle of competitive shogi.
Yaichi Kuzuryuu has just become the youngest Ryuuou after winning the grand championship. However, the shogi community is unwelcoming to his victory, some even calling him the worst Ryuuou in history. Moreover, he forgets about the agreement he made with Ai Hinatsuru, a little girl he promised to coach if he won. After she shows up at his doorstep, he reluctantly agrees to uphold his promise and makes Ai his disciple.
Together, they aim to improve and exceed the limits of their shogi prowess: Ai, to unlock her hidden talents; Yaichi, to prove to the world that he deserves his accomplishments. [Written by MAL Rewrite]
