'Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Eternal' Anime Films Premiere in 2020
The Usagi Special Birthday Party 2019 event announced on Sunday that the two-part theatrical sequel anime in the Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Crystal anime series, subtitled Eternal, will open in Japanese theaters in 2020. The official website also revealed a teaser visual (pictured) and a special promo.
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon Eternal serves as the fourth installment in Toei Animation's reboot of Naoko Takeuchi's original magical girl manga. The sequel was announced in January 2017 as a part of the franchise's 25th anniversary and later confirmed to be a two-part anime film covering the Dream arc in June of that year.
Chiaki Kon is returning from the third season to direct the films, featuring character designs by Kazuko Tadano, the 1992 Sailor Moon television anime's character designer. Takeuchi is also supervising the film project. The lead cast members are set to reprise their roles.
Commemorating the original series' 20th anniversary, the reboot was announced in 2012, with the aim to adapt the manga more faithfully. The first two anime seasons, covering the Dark Kingdom and Black Moon arcs, streamed semimonthly on Niconico beginning July 2014, and later premiered on television in Spring 2015. The third season, based on the Infinity arc, aired in Spring 2016.
VIZ Media licensed all three anime seasons in North America and streamed them through Hulu. The company released the first season on Blu-ray and DVD in August 2016, and the second and third in February and December 2017, respectively. Crunchyroll also simulcast the anime seasons as they ran in Japan.
