Light Novel 'Nigashita Sakana wa Ookikatta ga Tsuriageta Sakana ga Ookisugita Ken' Gets TV Anime in Spring 2026
Production company TMS Entertainment opened an official website for a television anime adaptation of Mayo Momoyo's Nigashita Sakana wa Ookikatta ga Tsuriageta Sakana ga Ookisugita Ken (The Fish I Missed Was Big, But I Caught Another Fish Was Too Big.) light novel on Monday, revealing the main cast, staff, a teaser visual (pictured), and teaser promotional video. The anime series will premiere in April 2026.

Momoyo initially penned the fantasy romance series as a short story on the Shousetsuka ni Narou website in October 2020, before launching a sequel series in December 2020. Square Enix began publishing the series with illustrations from Itsuki Mito under their SQEX Novel light novel imprint in August 2021. The fifth volume was released in December 2024, with the sixth volume went on sale on Friday. The series has a cumulative 1 million copies of its volumes in circulation.
Kaki Nagato began drawing a manga adaptation on Square Enix's Manga Up! service in April 2022. The eighth volume went on sale May 7, with the ninth volume scheduled to release on November 7.
Square Enix is releasing the manga in English on their Manga Up! website and app. The fourth volume shipped on September 16, with the fifth volume planned for a December 9 release.
Synopsis
From a very young age, people noticed that Maria, the youngest daughter of a duke, was filled with potential. She was raised as the heiress of her house, until the birth of her baby brother relieves her of her duties. She scrambles to find a husband, but all the eligible bachelors in her duchy are taken! At this rate, she's doomed to the life of a spinster!
Maria decides to study abroad in Rubini in hopes of finding a husband, with the help of her distant relative, Aida. But in a twist of fate, the Crown Prince breaks of his engagement with Maria, even though they've never met before!
