'Gensou Suikoden II' RPG Gets TV Anime Adaptation
Konami announced a television anime adaptation of Gensou Suikoden II (Suikoden II) during the Gensou Suikoden Live program on Tuesday. The anime will be produced by Konami animation, marking the studio's first full-length television anime.
The anime will be directed by Yuuzou Satou (Exception), who described Gensou Suikoden II as a grand fantasy war chronicle filled with a rich cast of characters.
Ryou Hino, producer at NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan, emphasized the emotional depth of the protagonist's journey alongside Jowy and Nanami, stating that Gensou Suikoden II was the ideal entry in the series to adapt first. Hino also highlighted the story's universal appeal, noting that Suikoden's world blends diverse cultures and unites humans and demi-humans in a shared struggle, making it a story with global resonance.
Last year at Tokyo Game Show 2024, Konami producer Rui Naitou expressed the desire to revive Suikoden beyond the HD remaster of Suikoden I & II, calling it the "first step" in the series' revival. This newly announced anime adaptation represents the "second step," aimed at reintroducing the franchise to both longtime fans and a new generation of viewers.
Naitou emphasized that the adaptation's goal is to remain faithful to the core themes of Gensou Suikoden II, ensuring that the story crafted by the late Yoshitaka Murayama, the series' creator who passed away in February 2024, is preserved and honored through animation.
The Suikoden franchise debuted in 1995 on the PlayStation, drawing inspiration from the classic Chinese novel Shui Hu Zhuan (Water Margin). The series is known for its deep storytelling, political intrigue, and the concept of destiny tied to the powerful "True Runes." Konami released Gensou Suikoden II 1998, followed by three more games in the main series in 2002, 2004, and 2006, as well as multiple spin-offs.
