The Ugly Duckling
あひるの子
Synopsis
Different-looking duckling leaves home, faces hardships, and journeys to find acceptance and his true identity.
Four ducklings are already swimming in the pond within a few days of hatching. Their mother is sitting on the last and largest egg. The grandmother duck, who likes to chat, worries that it may be a turkey egg. The chick that hatches three days later has a long neck and quacks in an unfamiliar way. However, the mother duck is relieved to see the youngest duckling actively training to swim. Being different from other ducklings in appearance, he faces challenges from other animals and struggles to find his place among his siblings. One evening, the youngest duckling leaves his mother and brothers to embark on a journey of self-discovery. As the seasons change from autumn to winter and beyond, the duckling encounters various creatures and experiences both kindness and hardship while searching for where he truly belongs. Through his travels, he learns about acceptance, identity, and the meaning of family. (Source: Japanese Animated Film Classics)
