The antagonists received vastly improved character writing, and this installment delivered the franchise's best world building and back stories. However, the production completely collapsed in the final two episodes with clumsy 3D renderings, manga scans inserted as stills, and excessive panning substituting for real animation, while the narrative jumped the shark and sidelined both Shinra and the 8th Company. This season ultimately earns a disappointed D+ at 68/100, leaving nothing but ash and cinders. The most egregious failure was the animation meltdown that trainwrecked the entire season.
